ABOUT ME

Let me say a few things...

First, thanks for being here. You clicked on my site to learn more about me, and that's pretty great. I live in a smallish town in west Michigan, the same area in which dwell other authors like Tracy Groot and Erin Craig. I live here with my wife and three kids and I doubt I'll ever leave. It's a beautiful state. You should really visit our Lake Michigan coast, if you never have. You won't be disappointed. Also, yes, there is a western side of Michigan. It's not all Detroit. It's even inhabited with real-life people.

I am hopelessly devoted to all of Michigan's professional sports franchises, the Lions, Red Wings, Pistons, Tigers. I have been a fan of the Wolverines since my step-dad revealed to me he liked the Spartans. We didn't get along so well.

I love the fall. I love the crispness in the air, wearing flannel, and going on wine tours with maples and oaks bursting with color as a backdrop. I love walking with my hands in my pockets to keep them warm, drinking cider, and seeking out the best pumpkins in the patch. I adore Halloween and all the creepiness surrounding it. The worst part about October is it eventually ends. But then I love the Christmas season, too. We chop down our own tree every year, then laugh at the mess we hauled home, wondering why we ever thought it looked so good in the field.

I have completed two novels so far--Splintered Elm, a ghost story centered upon the local lore of a rural town in southern Illinois, set during the blessed month of October of 1902 and Incandescent Hum, set in West Virginia during the Satanic Panic of the late 80's and centered around four young people who hang out at a bowling alley and become unlikely friends despite the darkness that brought them together.

I tend to create characters, give them a setting, and let them walk me through the story. I strive to create as much immersivity as I can without getting too bogged down in the details. I prefer to trust the reader to fill in some of the blanks. Makes it more personal, I think.

I also hate talking about myself, so this section is really hard to write. I’ll end with that.

Cheers.
